Apple is gearing up for the launch of its 3rd generation tablet, the iPad 3 (or 2S as it may be). The iPad has been a great success, forcing almost every other competitor to launch a mediocre version. Almost 2 years since we saw the first iPad, there is still no competition for Apple. HP failed with the TouchPad and a bunch of Android tablets failed to succeed. The Playbook arrogance costed big bucks to RIM and we are not hearing from a tablet maker whom we have long termed a vaporware. Notion Ink Adam.
Creating huge hype at CES 2009 and 2010, Notion Ink disappointed with the first release of Adam. While we would count Notion Ink in line with the makers of JooJoo, the fact is that Notion Ink delivered a product and are still alive. After a brief silence, Adam is making news again for its 2nd generation version. So Adam II as it is dubbed, would it shake the tablet industry? Quick answer: we don’t think so.
Adam II is being promoted with a Texas Instruments Dual-Core processor and for once even Notion Ink is talking the same language that they once thrashed at CES. Next gen processor, New Android OS (ICS) and a jargon “Modular Based Software Architecture” that perhaps app developers would better understand. The fact of the matter is, Adam II has no design shown, the startup expects to do a lot of things and we still believe it isn’t an earth shaking development.
RIM Playbook learnt the hard way that making a tablet won’t get developers, Microsoft is finding it tough to get quality apps on Windows Phone 7, whoever thinks that Notion Ink can use the media hype it has to get developers and sell millions of talbets, should taste a bit of reality. For now, our advice to western media, stay alert, there is a saying ‘once bitten, twice shy’.
